Our NICU Journey
“Our baby boy Calvin was born at 28+6 weighing a mighty 3lb 13oz (hello 97th percentile!). Although we had days before his birth to try and prepare, ask questions, and educate ourselves on premature babies, nothing can ever fully prepare you for it.
I’ll never forget the moment he came out crying. We had been told countless times that he would like need to be resuscitated due to his gestational age. This was Calvin’s first of many triumphs. Despite how well he was doing, we struggled a lot during those first few weeks. So many unknowns, so little progress, and seeing your baby in pain or discomfort without being able to do anything about it is one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had.
If it had not been for the incredible team of nurses and doctors along with our fellow NICU parents, we would have been so lost. Their guidance and support truly pushed us through some of the darkest days.
After weeks of struggling to be weaned off oxygen, bradycardia spells, and feeding issues, Calvin woke up one day and decided he was ready to get out of there! He came off oxygen on a Tuesday, had his feeding tube removed that Friday, and we were home Sunday night!
Calvin is now 3 months old (4 weeks adjusted) and is weighing over 11lbs! While these newborn days and nights have been hard, we will forever be grateful for all of the time we get to spend with our baby.” NICU Mama, Macy
