Mono Mono Twins
"I was pregnant with Mono Mono twin girls.
Mono Mono twins are when they share the same sac and same placenta, causing it too be a high risk pregnancy, due to risks of cord knots and tangling. I was admitted into the hospital at 24 wks 6 days for close monitoring to make sure we were in the right place if something were to happened to where we’d have to deliver them. At 28 wks 1 day their heart rates were dropping into the 60s so they had to quickly do an emergency C-section.
When they delivered them one of them had a cord wrapped around her neck once, the other had her sisters cord and her cord wrapped around her neck 3 times in a braided look. They also had a baseball sized knot of cords in between them. When they were born they were intubated immediately. My girls were put into the NICU for close monitoring, they were both put on an oscillator to shake their little lungs. They were just 2lb 9oz and 2lb 3oz. One of them had a large PDA and the other had a medium sized PDA which they treated them with a couple medications to try to close them. It was successful for one of them but for the other, hers opened back up and she was having trouble getting off the oscillator. As soon as they put her just on the vent they took her straight to the Cath lab to have a procedure where they went through the groin artery up into her heart to plug up the hole. After they did this she proceeded to get better with her breathing and both girls went through multiple weanings of oxygen.
At 1 month old, one was diagnosed with a grade 1 brain hemorrhage and had a little white matter, which is a little dead spot in the brain from lack oxygen. They continued through the NICU stay with struggles with brady's, breathing, and feeding difficulties.
After 120 days one was able to come home, then after 124 days the other came home!
They are now 6 yrs old and just completed kindergarten! The girls have been through therapies and have had G-tubes for feeding support, but are now doing well!" NICU Mom, Rebecca
